Navigated to Faculty of Science English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements for Graduate Programs.

The University of Calgary requires some applicants to provide proof of proficiency in English. Graduate programs in the Faculty of Science require higher minimum scores than those specified by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The required scores are:

  • TOEFL iBT (tests taken before January 21, 2026): 97 (minimum 23 in each section)

  • TOEFL iBT (tests taken on or after January 21, 2026): 5.0 (minimum 5.0 in each section)

  • IELTS (Academic): 7.0 (minimum 6.5 in each section)

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: 180 (minimum 175 on each section)

  • CAEL: 70 (minimum 60 in each section)

  • PTE (Academic): 76 (minimum 70 in each section)

  • Duolingo English Test: 135 (minimum sub-score 125)

  • Academic Communication Certificate: Minimum grade of A- in each course

All other English language proficiency policies (including test validity periods and waiver provisions) follow Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements.
