General Program Information

Graduate Certificates in Social Work serve as stand-alone credentials for practicing social workers who seek formal professional development opportunities in their field or provide practicing social workers a flexible option to pursue the MSW degree.

Students may complete a given certificate only once. Repeating the same certificate is not permitted. Not all Graduate Certificates and specializations are offered every year. For availability, consult the Faculty of Social Work website.

Program Delivery

The certificates are completed full-time and courses are offered by distance (online) learning. Most require virtual and/or in-person residencies in Calgary or Edmonton. Failure to attend residencies may result in a student being withdrawn from the course(s) or program.

Note: International students admitted to a Graduate Certificate with a mandatory in-person campus residency must present a valid study permit approval letter and/or study permit to Student Services in the Faculty of Social Work prior to the start of the program.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
