3.2.4 Werklund School of Education - Course Load

The BEd program is a full-time program. Only students admitted to the BEd will be permitted to register in 400- and 500-level Education (EDUC) courses.

EDUC 400 and 500-level terms must be taken  in the prescribed sequence and as a full-time course load. Students in the Four-Year BEd program may pursue non-education  terms on a part-time basis, but are encouraged to consult with an advisor about program implications. Concurrent students should refer to co-degree faculties for regulations regarding course loads during co-degree years. See also 3.4 Progression.

Additional Courses

Since the BEd program is a full-time professional program, students are not allowed to take more than 15 units per each Fall or Winter Term, or to take courses from outside the Werklund School of Education during an Education term, without the express permission of the Associate Dean or Director of Student Experience, if admitted into the Honours Program. After-Degree BEd students may wish to take additional courses during non-Education terms, and can do so with permission from the Undergraduate Programs in Education Office, provided the courses do not interfere with Education terms, and these courses will be designated as Extra-to-Degree upon graduation of the Education program. Students who have not received permission from the Associate Dean or Director of Student Experience to take non-Education courses during Education terms may be de-enrolled.

Four-year pathway students may take up to 18 units in non-Education terms.

On-Campus students wishing to take Education (EDUC) courses online may take online courses where online sections have been designated for on-campus students for a maximum of 15 units online. Enrolment in online courses is space-pending, cannot be guaranteed, and may require the approval of the Associate Dean or Director of Student Experience. Scheduling of online sections for on-campus students varies from year to year and cannot be guaranteed.

Community-Based students must take their Summer Term Education (EDUC) courses on-campus, per 3.2.3 Werklund School of Education - Residency. Should students wish to take additional Education (EDUC) courses on-campus, they may do so only with approval of the Associate Dean or Director of Student Experience. Enrolment in on-campus courses is space-pending, and cannot be guaranteed. Students in the Four-Year Community-Based Bachelor of Education may choose to take non-Education courses on-campus, where available.

Courses From Other Institutions

All Education (EDUC) courses must be taken through the Werklund School of Education.

Students in the Four-Year BEd program may choose to take additional coursework at another institution to use towards their required non-Education courses. Students may apply online for authorization by requesting a Letter of Permission through their online Student Centre. Students should check with undergraduate student advisors in the Werklund School of Education to ensure that the courses taken would meet requirements prior to enrolling.

The Letter of Permission must be obtained before the student registers for the courses at the other institution.

It will be the responsibility of the student to ensure that an official transcript of grades is forwarded directly to Admissions at the University of Calgary in order that appropriate credit may be officially recorded.

Students with poor academic performance, including those on probation or having a large number of withdrawals, may not be allowed to take courses at another institution.  Four-Year On-Campus pathway students participating in the Academic Turnaround Program are not eligible to take courses at another institution.

Students in the Five-Year BEd (Concurrent) program should consult with their co-operating Faculty if they are interested in taking courses from another institution to be used towards their non-education degree requirements.

Students in the Two-Year BEd (After-Degree) and Two-Year BEd (After-Degree) Community-Based pathway programs may choose to take additional coursework at another institution to meet certification requirements prior to admission to the program, however, all Education (EDUC) courses must be taken at the Werklund School of Education.
