3.5 Schulich School of Engineering - Examinations
Supplemental Examinations
Supplemental examinations provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to demonstrate competence in a course. The primary goal is to allow students a chance to earn a "C-" grade in the course so they can use the course as a prerequisite. As such, if a student passes a supplemental examination a "C-" grade will be recorded on the student’s transcript. If a student fails the supplemental examination, the original grade will stand. The passing grade for the supplemental exam should be indicated on the exam cover page.
Supplemental examinations are not available for all courses. Availability of supplemental exams is guaranteed only for courses that explicitly indicate on their official course outline that a supplemental examination is possible. Supplemental examinations may be offered in other courses at the discretion of the department offering the course.
Additionally:
No more than two supplemental examination privileges, in any University of Calgary course, may be granted to a student in one academic year,
No more than four supplemental examination privileges will be granted to a student over their whole degree program.
Only one supplemental exam will be allowed per course.
Supplemental examinations will normally be offered at the same time as deferred final examination for that course, during Spring/Summer intersession, or block weeks. Supplemental examinations may be in a different format than the regular final examination but will cover the same course material as the regular final examination. Supplemental examinations are not allowed for deferred examinations.
Supplemental exams do not replace the deferred examination process as outlined in G.3.4 Deferral of Final Assessments and are a privilege earned by meeting the criteria set out below.
A student is eligible for a supplemental examination if one is offered in a course and the student meets the following requirements:
The student was in good academic standing in the term when the student was registered in the course,
The student has earned an average cumulative grade of "C-" or better on in-course assessment, and
The student achieved the minimum grade for any in-course assessments as indicated on the course outline (e.g. requirement to pass the lab component, term project).
A student is not eligible for a supplemental examination if the student:
Has been previously allowed to write a supplemental examination for the course.
Earned a grade greater than a "D+" in the course.
Did not write the final examination in the course.
Is on academic probation.
Was assigned a failing grade in the course due to academic misconduct.
Is a graduate student.
Application Process:
If the supplemental examination is granted, the student will be informed in writing by the Engineering Student Centre.
Students who indicate that they want to write the supplemental examination will be charged a $150.00 fee for each supplemental exam by Student Enrolment Services.
Students who decide not to write the supplemental examination after fees have been assessed will forfeit the supplemental examination fee.
Special Supplemental Examinations for Graduating Students
If eligible, graduating students may alternatively opt to write a special supplemental examination for Engineering courses required in the final year of their undergraduate program. Special supplemental examinations are granted at the discretion of the Engineering Undergraduate Studies Committee (EUSC) and are considered at their academic performance review or convocation meetings. If a special supplemental examination is granted at an EUSC meeting the student will be informed in writing and the exam will normally be written in the term following the EUSC meeting. Once informed, the student must apply to write the examination prescribed. Students will be charged a non-refundable $150.00 fee per each supplemental exam by Student Enrolment Services.
A student is eligible for a special supplemental examination in a given course provided that the following requirements are met:
If raising one or two overall course grades in courses taken since the last review period would enable them to meet the graduation requirements at the time of the convocation meeting of the EUSC.
If the student fulfilled all (if any) specific term-work components indicated in the course outline as being mandatory to pass the course.
If the student has not previously written a supplemental examination in the course.
A graduating student is not eligible for a special supplemental examination if the student:
Meets the graduation requirements as determined in the EUSC convocation meeting.
Did not write the final examination in the course.
Was assigned a failing grade in the course due to academic misconduct.
Special supplemental examinations may be in a different format than the final examination originally written by the student in the course but will cover the same course materials. The supplemental exam grade will replace the final exam grade originally obtained by the student in the course. The student grade on all in-course assessments will be retained in determining their overall course grade, and the letter grade will be assigned according to the percentage-letter grade conversion table on the course outline. In exceptional circumstances, the department offering the course may recommend a supplemental exam that does not adhere to the above guidelines, subject to the approval of the dean or their delegate.
If a special supplemental exam is granted for a graduating student, the department offering the course will provide a department approved copy of the supplemental final exam to the Engineering Student Center a week before the scheduled supplemental exam date.
Special supplemental exams do not replace the deferred examination process as outlined in G.3.4 Scheduling of Deferred Final Assessments.
