3.6 Schulich School of Engineering - Graduation

Graduation Requirements

Students are required to obtain credit for the full set of courses listed in the Calendar for any particular program.

For graduation in all branches of Engineering, a student must have an overall grade point average of at least 2.00 with no uncleared "F" grades. The average will be calculated by using the numerical equivalent of the best grade in each course taken. A six-unit course will be counted as two three-unit courses for this purpose.

All students in the Schulich School of Engineering must complete a minimum of 500 hours of practical work experience and associated activities before graduation. Full details of the practical experience requirement are outlined in the Practical Experience Requirement section of each major program.

Note: An "F" grade in any technical elective course or complementary studies elective course may be cleared by a passing grade in another acceptable technical elective or complementary studies elective, respectively.

Degrees "With Distinction"

Starting in Fall 2025, students entering Engineering programs will be eligible for the designation "With Distinction" on their official transcripts and graduation parchments if their GPA(1) meets the following two criteria:

  • is 3.60 or above and

  • is within the top 25 per cent(2) of the GPAs(1) of their major programs graduating class of students.

Notes:

1. The GPA will be calculated based on the most recent 90 units taken at the University of Calgary that are used to fulfill degree requirements. For cases in which the last 90 units must include some, but not all, of a group of courses taken concurrently, the selection will be made in the manner most advantageous to the student.

2. The GPA cut-off equivalent to the top 25 per cent of each major program will be calculated once a year based on student performance in each program at the Spring conferral. The GPA cut-off will be carried forward to the November and February conferrals.

Students Admitted Prior to Fall 2025

The notation "With Distinction" will be inscribed on the permanent record and graduation parchment of students who obtain a grade point average of at least 3.60 over the last 60 units taken at the University of Calgary, with no more than one "D" or "D+" grade and no failures. The notation "With Distinction" will not be granted if a student obtains an "F" grade in a CR/F course (including Internship) which has been completed during the time period in which the last 60 units have been taken. For cases in which the last 60 units must include some, but not all, of a group of courses taken concurrently, the selection will be made in the manner most advantageous to the student. Students who have taken part of their work at another university or who have transferred into this School may be granted a degree "With Distinction" at the discretion of the School.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
