B.16 Personal Information

Personal information is collected as part of a student's record, and is collected under the authority of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This information is required to notify you of information relevant to your studies at the University of Calgary. If you have questions about the collection or use of this information please contact the Office of the Registrar: registra@ucalgary.ca.

Students are required to inform the University of changes in personal information. This includes changes to contact information, name, citizenship, etc.

Students can change their legal/primary name, address, phone number or alternative email address through their Student Centre. Students who wish to change their legal name or citizenship/immigration status must provide approved documentation. For a list of acceptable documentation visit ucalgary.ca/registrar/student-centre/updating-personal-information.

A Change of Personal Information form is available at ucalgary.ca/registrar/student-centre/student-forms. Students will be required to review and confirm their legal name when they apply to graduate.

It is also to the student's benefit to maintain up-to-date contact information at the University after graduation.

Preferred Name

Students can choose to use a preferred name, rather than their primary or legal name, to be used across many university systems (e.g., class lists). The use of a preferred name is optional. If you do not enter a preferred name, your primary/legal name will be the default name used. You can review and update your preferred name through your Student Centre.

Misuse of the preferred name will be reviewed by the Student Conduct Office. Misuse includes, but is not limited to, frequent name changes, impersonating another individual or the use of offensive words.

Emergency Contact

To support your safety and well-being students must provide an emergency contact through their Student Centre. This information is essential should an emergency arise and will only be used by senior university officials.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
