Master of Engineering Program with Internship

The Master of Engineering Program with Internship is offered in the following departments:

  • Biomedical Engineering

  • Chemical & Petroleum Engineering

  • Civil Engineering

  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (not available for Software Engineering)

  • Environmental Engineering

  • Geomatics Engineering

  • Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering

The MEng Program with Internship is a course-based program, normally three-years, which includes an internship year in addition to the regular two-year MEng program. The number of spaces in the Master of Engineering Program with Internship is limited and entry is competitive. Applicants will indicate their intention to apply for the MEng Program with Internship at the time of application to the MEng Program. Meeting the minimum admission requirements of the home department does not guarantee admission to the MEng Program with Internship.

In addition to meeting the program requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the home department, students admitted to the Master of Engineering Program with Internship must complete a minimum of eight, to a maximum of sixteen, consecutive months (two to four consecutive terms) of supervised work experience in industry. The internship year may commence in May or September after the student has completed the first year of the Master of Engineering program. The student is expected to return after their internship to complete their graduate program.

Students who have confirmed an internship placement will be registered in the required graduate internship courses (course, course, course, course (12 – 24 units)) corresponding to the length of the placement. Appropriate tuition and general fees will be payable. Each work experience is supervised by a Professional Engineer or Department Leader in the host company. Normally the entire internship period is spent with the same employer.

Each student is expected to complete the Certificate in Career Elevation within their first year of the MEng program. Completion of the non-credit workshops is a milestone requirement of the internship designation. See website for more information.

Students who successfully complete the requirements of the Master of Engineering Program with Internship will obtain the Internship designation on their transcripts and degree parchments.

Work Term Assessment and Progression Requirements

The mandatory work term courses (INTE 630.01 - .04) are graded on a credit (CR) or fail (F) basis.

Prior to starting the internship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time graduate student registered in the MEng course-based program with internship.

  • Be in good academic standing, defined as: 1) receiving a B- or above in all courses completed, and 2) Maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.00 calculated on all coursework completed prior to commencing the internship.

  • Have completed a minimum of 15-units of coursework in the MEng Program.

  • Have completed the Certificate in Career Elevation.

  • Have secured an internship placement that meets Employer Job Placement Requirements and Responsibilities.

  • Be in good financial standing with the university. Students with holds on their accounts cannot be registered into the INTE internship courses.

If a student's academic performance in the first year, prior to starting the internship, results in the student not being in good standing, the student will normally be required to withdraw from the Master of Engineering Program with Internship. Students who have been required to withdraw from the Master of Engineering Internship Program will no longer have access to the program's job search systems or support. If the student is required to withdraw from the Master of Engineering Program with Internship but has already accepted a placement, the employer will be informed that the student is no longer registered in the Master of Engineering Program with Internship.

Students who start an internship and are not successful in completing a minimum of two consecutive work terms will receive a fail in their current INTE course and will not be eligible to receive the internship designation. Those students will still be able to obtain the MEng credential as long as they complete all other requirements as outlined by their graduate home department.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
