Completion requirement

Students must complete a total of 98 units in Law courses, including achieving a satisfactory performance (a "C-", or higher, or "CR") in the following courses:

Students must achieve satisfactory performance ("C-", or higher) in a course that meets the following requirements. See the Faculty of Law website (law.ucalgary.ca) for more information.

  • Upper-Year Writing

  • International

  • Theoretical Perspectives

Note that all upper-year (i.e., second and third year) JD students must register for at least 12 units per term, to a maximum of 18, and for at least 31 units per year, to a maximum of 36.

With approval from the Associate Dean (Academic), students may complete a major term paper focused on Aboriginal and Indigenous Law to fulfill 3 of the 12 units of elective courses. Said paper may be completed as a part of Law 695 or another existing elective course wherein the major term paper component is eligible to satisfy the upper year writing requirement(1). Students who complete a major paper in one of the listed courses above cannot apply for that paper to count towards the Concentration to satisfy an additional 3 units.

Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

The Faculty of Law will not permit the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) on any course.
