Completion requirement

For Faculty of Arts Major Degree requirements, or if completing this program as a Double major, Combined Degree or Second Degree, refer to:

Complete ALL of the following Requirement Sets:

Earn at least 48 credits from the following:

  • An additional 6 units in Linguistics.

  • At least 6 units, inclusive of the courses used to fulfill requirements above, must be at the 400 level or above.

Language Requirements: Students must successfully complete a minimum of 24 units to a maximum of 30 units in accordance with the requirements for one of the following language options:

Fulfill ANY of the following requirements:
Earn at least 24 credits from the following:
OR

A minimum of 24 units from courses labelled Chinese, including Chinese 333, and at least 6 units at the 400 and/or 500 level.

Earn at least 24 credits from the following:

Students choosing the French option and beginning in French 213 should be aware that 30 units will normally be required to complete the French option requirements.

OR

A minimum of 24 units from courses labelled German, including German 413 and 415, and at least an additional 3 units at the 400 or 500 level.

Earn at least 24 credits from the following:
OR

A minimum of 24 units from courses labelled Italian including at least 6 units at the 400 and/or 500 level.

Earn at least 24 credits from the following:
OR

A minimum of 24 units from courses labelled Japanese, including Japanese 333, and at least 6 units at the 400 and/or 500 level.

Earn at least 24 credits from the following:
OR

A minimum of 24 units from courses labelled Russian, including Russian 332 and 334, and at least 6 units at the 400 and/or 500 level.

Earn at least 24 credits from the following:

From the courses listed below in a maximum of two languages, students must successfully complete a minimum of 24 units to a maximum of 30 units, including a minimum of 3 units at the 400 or 500 level:

Overlapping Programs

Programs in Linguistics cannot be taken in conjunction with the program in Linguistics and Language. This restriction applies to Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

Language programs (i.e., majors or minors) offered by the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures can only be combined with the major program in Linguistics and Language if the language or languages in the former program differ from the chosen Language Option for the latter. This restriction applies to Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

Programs in Language and Culture can only be combined with the major program in Linguistics and Languages if the language or languages in the two programs are different. Students in the Language and Culture program cannot complete a minor in the language that is their primary or secondary language. This restriction applies to Major-plus-minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.
