A.7 Required to Withdraw and Suspended Students

A.7.1 Required to Withdraw Students

Students who have been required to withdraw for academic reasons from any faculty at the University of Calgary or another post-secondary institution will not be permitted to participate in academic work at the University until at least twelve months have elapsed since the student was required to withdraw, with the exception of University of Calgary students accepted into the Academic Turnaround Program (ATP). See section B.18 Academic Turnaround Program (ATP).

Students may apply for the next admission intake following the twelve month period. Admission consideration will be based on current admission requirements, including the competitive admission average, as outlined in A.5 Undergraduate Degree Admission Requirements with the following exceptions:

  1. A student who was required to withdraw from the University of Calgary for academic reasons other than a low grade point average, may be eligible for admission to another faculty provided they maintained a 2.00 or higher grade point average since their last academic review and have not attended another post-secondary institution.

  2. A student who was required to obtain a grade point average (GPA) above 2.00 for continuation in a University of Calgary program may be eligible for admission consideration to another faculty provided they maintained at least a 2.00 grade point average since their last academic review and have not attended another post-secondary institution.

In addition to meeting current admission requirements, students seeking admission after having been required to withdraw for academic reasons may be asked to submit a letter of explanation that outlines the reason for the RTW; outlines their academic plans; and explains why they are now likely to be successful. All students who do not meet current admission averages must provide a letter of explanation (see section A.10 Equitable and Inclusive Admission Process. Admission will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Students who are granted admission after having been required to withdraw will be admitted on probation and may have course registration restrictions (e.g., limit on number of courses they can register in) or may be required to achieve a specific level of performance as determined by the faculty.

Students who have twice been required to withdraw from the University of Calgary or any other post-secondary institution will not normally be considered for admission at any time. Students may provide a letter of explanation (see section A.10 Equitable and Inclusive Admission Process. Admission will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

A student expelled from a faculty at the University of Calgary or another post-secondary institution will not be considered for re-admission to the same faculty. Expelled students may be considered for admission to another faculty on a case-by-case basis.

A.7.2 Suspended Students

Applicants seeking admission who have been involved in academic/non-academic misconduct at another institution which resulted in a suspension will only be considered for admission once the suspension period has elapsed. In cases of suspension, admission to the University of Calgary is at the discretion of the faculty to which the applicant is seeking admission. Students apply through the Equitable and Inclusive Admission Process (section A.10).

Students who have been suspended from the University of Calgary may register for courses scheduled to begin after the period of Suspension. An application for admission would be required if registration is not initiated in the next eligible term following the period of Suspension. Students should refer to A.4.1 Application for Admission for information about the applications process.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
