Continuation Requirements

The academic performance of Honours students is reviewed every year following the Winter Term. Continuation in Honours requires a GPA of at least 3.30 over all courses completed and all courses completed in the major field since the last review.

Faculty of Arts Requirements for Honours Degrees

The following requirements and regulations apply to all Honours degrees offered by the Faculty of Arts:

1. Completion of 120 units, including completion of the “Major Field with Honours Requirements” and “Other Requirements” for the relevant degree as defined below.

2. Completion of a minimum of 54 units in the major field. Normally a maximum of 72 units in the major field is allowed.

3. Academic Achievement:

(a) a minimum GPA of 3.30 over the final 90 units,

(b) a minimum GPA of 3.30 over all courses in the major field in the final 90 units,

(c) no more than 18 units with a grade of D or D+ including no more than 6 units with a grade of D or D+ in the major field.

4. Transfer Credit Limit: At least 60 units must be completed through the University of Calgary. No more than 60 units of transfer credits may be counted toward the degree, including no more than 24 units in the major field.

5. Junior Course Limit: No more than 48 units at the 200 level.

6. Science Requirement: A minimum of 6 units from the Faculty of Science. (This requirement does not apply to the BFA Honours degree.)

7. Physical Activity Courses: No more than 6 units may be taken from: Dance Education Activity/Theory, Outdoor Pursuits Activity/Theory, and Physical Education Activity/Theory.

First Class Honours

“First-Class Honours” will be noted on the transcript and graduation parchment of students completing an Honours Degree with a GPA of at least 3.60 over the final 90 units. The GPA is calculated to two decimal places only and is not rounded up. Courses from other institutions as well as the University of Calgary will be used in this calculation. In cases in which the last 90 units include some but not all courses taken concurrently, the selection will be made to the advantage of the student.

Faculty of Arts - Combined Degrees

Students who want a combination not on the list must complete the “Change of Program” form to request permission from both faculties.

Faculty of Arts Requirements for Combined Degrees

Students need to complete 150 units, including all Major Field and Other Requirements pertaining to each degree, and must follow the Faculty regulations relevant to each program. The Faculty of Arts allows an increase of the junior course limit to 54 units.

Faculty of Arts - Degrees with a Double Major

Students pursuing a degree with a Double Major must complete all the Faculty, Major Field and Other Requirements pertaining to each Major. Students may need more than 120 units to complete some Double Majors.

Faculty of Arts - Second Degrees (After-Degrees)

Students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree may pursue a second Bachelor’s degree, also called an “After-degree.”

Students cannot pursue an after-degree in a major field in which they already possess a degree, or in a field in which there is significant overlap. See 3.3.7 Overlapping Programs and A.5.5 Second-Degree Students.

Faculty of Arts Requirements for Second Degrees (After-Degrees)

The requirements and regulations pertaining to Major Degree Programs and Honours Degrees apply to a second degree, with the following differences.

Of the 120 units required to complete a Second Degree:

(a) Up to 60 units can be used from a previous degree, including no more than 24 units in the new major field.

(b) At least 60 units must be completed through the University of Calgary. Courses completed at the University of Calgary that were extra to a previous degree may be counted toward this requirement.

Admission to and Completion of a Second Degree with Honours:

Admission to Honours will be determined based on the GPA calculated over the most recent 60 units, which may include courses from the previous degree.

The GPA required for graduation with Honours will be calculated using only the courses completed for the Second Degree, i.e., those included under (b) above.

The Second Degree will be awarded With Distinction or “First-Class Honours” when a GPA of 3.60 or more is achieved over the courses completed for the Second Degree, i.e., those included under (b) above.

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 54 units to a maximum of 72 units in Courses Constituting the Field of German while fulfilling the Program Requirements.

Faculty of Arts - Minor Programs

Students declare a Minor by requesting a Change of Program through the Student Centre. Students may declare up to two Minors. The completion of a Minor is recorded on the transcript.

To earn a Minor, students must complete at least 30 units and no more than 36 units from the minor Field of Study, including the requirements specified for the particular Minor under the program details.

Faculty of Arts - Co-operative Education Programs

Introduction

For regulations pertaining to all Co-operative Education programs, see Work Integrated Learning.

See below for Summary of Degree Programs for Arts programs that can be completed with Co-operative Education (Co-op).

Concurrent degrees with Werklund cannot be completed with Co-op.

Co-op programs normally take five years to complete and include 12 to 16 months of paid supervised work experience. Students who complete the requirements will graduate with a Co-operative Education designation on their transcript and parchment.

Students interested in pursuing Co-op should discuss their plans and course selection with the Co-op Co-ordinator or Advisor in the Arts Students’ Centre as early in their programs as possible.

It is the student’s responsibility to find work placements. Work placements are not guaranteed. The role of the Co-op Coordinator and Advisor is to assist students in finding work placements, including help with developing job-searching, interviewing, and resume-building skills.

Application

Students normally apply in the Fall term of their second year of study for admission in the same term. The application deadline is October 15. Application details are found at arts.ucalgary.ca/current-students/undergraduate/arts-co-operative-education-program.

Students in a second degree (after-degree) program may apply to complete their degree with Co-op. Application for admission to Co-op must be made when the student applies for admission to the second degree.

Admissions

In addition to the criteria listed at 2.2 Requirements, the Faculty of Arts admission criteria are:

1. Completion of at least 27 units, and no more than 93 units at the time of application, to allow for at least 3 full-time academic semesters for Co-op work term sequencing.

2. A grade point average of 2.50 over the most recent 30 units.

Individual applications are reviewed to determine combined degrees, change of programs, transfer credits or other possible exceptions.

Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. Capacity in the program may be limited due to program resources and market conditions.

Work Terms and Course Work

Progress through the Co-operative Education Program is bound by the rules concerning Registration, Course Work, Student Standing, Fees and Expenses and Withdrawal Policies specified in Work-Integrated Learning found in the Experiential Learning section of the Calendar.

Students complete mandatory preparatory modules during the Fall Term in which they are admitted, search for placement during Winter Term, and enter their first work-term in Spring/Summer or the following Fall Term. Work-terms may be interspersed with academic terms or completed consecutively. A minimum of three work-terms is required to receive the Co-op Designation. Students must finish on a full-time academic term (at least 9 units). Exceptions require the approval of the Academic Director of Co-op.

Preparatory Modules

Students must complete the Orientation and Pre-Work Preparation modules in D2L before starting their first work-term.

Work-Term Activity

Each four-month work term is registered as a Co-operative Education 511 course. Co-operative Education courses are in addition to the normal requirements for a degree program.

Students are expected to focus on their work during a work term but may elect to take one three-unit course provided that the course does not occur during work hours or interfere with work-term responsibilities.

Work-Term Assessment

Co-operative Education 511 courses are graded on a completed requirements (CR)/fail (F) basis. A passing grade requires satisfactory performance as assessed by the Academic Director of Co-op on the basis of the following:

(a) the Co-op Co-ordinator or Advisor's evaluation of job performance, which is based on an on-site visit where practical;

(b) the employer's evaluation of job performance;

(c) the student's self-assessment of job performance and the overall job experience described in a work-term reflective report.

Achieve a minimum GPA of 2.50 over their final 90 units.

Embedded Certificates

An Embedded Certificate is a credential that is comprised of 12-24 units and is taken concurrently with an eligible degree program. Embedded certificates must be completed prior to graduation from a degree program and are noted on the parchment and transcript. While most embedded certificates are completed within the degree requirements, some may require additional time and courses in order to complete.

Admissions

Students may apply for a change of program to enter the certificate program through their Student Centre. Any undergraduate student is eligible for admission to an Embedded Certificate, unless prohibited by their home faculty. Students are encouraged to discuss their interest in the certificate with the department/faculty offering the certificate prior to starting the certificate. Students’ overall academic progression in their degree program, including academic probation, will be subject to the rules and regulations of their home faculty, as set out in the Calendar.

Completion Requirements

Undergraduate students must successfully complete their degree requirements in order to receive the Embedded Certificate. Students will graduate according to their individual degree program requirements. Completion of the embedded certificate will be noted on the parchment provided all embedded certificate requirements have been successfully completed.
