Graduation Requirements

Complete ALL of the following Requirement Sets:

Faculty of Arts - Graduation Requirements - Major Degree Programs

The following requirements and regulations apply to all degrees in the Faculty of Arts (with the exceptions noted below).

Completion of 120 units, including completion of the “Major Field Requirements” and “Other Requirements” for the relevant degree as specified below
Completion of a minimum of 42 to a maximum of 60 units in the major field, as specified below. An exception to the maximum of 60 units is allowable in the BFA and BMus programs.
Academic Achievement:
1. A minimum GPA of 2.00 over all courses in the major field and over all courses in the program.
2. No more than 18 units with a grade of D or D+ including no more than 6 units with a grade of D or D+ in the major field.
Transfer Credit Limit: At least 60 units must be completed through the University of Calgary. No more than 60 units of transfer credit may be counted toward the degree, including no more than 24 units in the major field (with the exception of the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Fine Arts).
Junior Course Limit: No more than 48 units at the 200 level (with the exception of the Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies and the Bachelor of Film Studies, which allow 54 units at the 200 level).
Science Requirement: A minimum of 6 units from the Faculty of Science. (This requirement does not apply to the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Fine Arts.)
Physical Activity Courses: No more than 6 units may be used from: Dance Education Activity/Theory, Outdoor Pursuits Activity/Theory, and Physical Education Activity/Theory.

Graduation with Distinction

With Distinction will be noted on the permanent record and graduation parchment of students completing a Major or Double Major Degree with a GPA of at least 3.60 over the last 90 units. The GPA is calculated to two decimal places only and is not rounded up. Courses from other institutions as well as the University of Calgary will be used in this calculation. In cases in which the last 90 units include some but not all courses taken concurrently, the selection will be made to the advantage of the student.

Faculty of Arts - Second Degrees (After Degrees)

Students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree may pursue a second Bachelor’s degree, also called an “After-degree.”

Students cannot pursue an after-degree in a major field in which they already possess a degree, or in a field in which there is significant overlap. See 3.3.7 Overlapping Programs and A.5.5 Second-Degree Students.

Faculty of Arts Requirements for Second Degrees (After-Degrees)

The requirements and regulations pertaining to Major Degree Programs and Honours Degrees apply to a second degree, with the following differences.

Of the 120 units required to complete a Second Degree:

Up to 60 units can be used from a previous degree, including no more than 24 units in the new major field.
At least 60 units must be completed through the University of Calgary. Courses completed at the University of Calgary that were extra to a previous degree may be counted toward this requirement.

Admission to and Completion of a Second Degree with Honours:

Admission to Honours will be determined based on the GPA calculated over the most recent 60 units, which may include courses from the previous degree.

The GPA required for graduation with Honours will be calculated using only the courses completed for the Second Degree, i.e., those included under (b) above.

The Second Degree will be awarded With Distinction or “First-Class Honours” when a GPA of 3.60 or more is achieved over the courses completed for the Second Degree, i.e., those included under (b) above.

Faculty of Arts - Overlapping Programs

No more than half of the courses used to complete the field of study requirements of one program can be used toward the completion of another program (or programs).

This principle applies to double majors, combined degrees, second degrees and major/minor combinations.

Students should be sure to take account of the overlapping principle in choosing courses for interdisciplinary programs combined with other programs.

Impermissible combinations of particular programs are specified in Programs.

BSc in Communication and Culture

Completion requirement

Note: Applications to this program are currently suspended while the program is under review. Students currently in the BSc in Communication and Culture should continue to follow the program as described below.

The Bachelor of Science in Communication and Culture is a four-year multidisciplinary degree focusing on courses in the Domain of Science, which includes all courses offered by the Faculty of Science and many additional science-based courses from disciplines within the Faculty of Arts. Students interested in a multidisciplinary program with a focus on science should also consider the BSc (Natural Sciences) Program offered by the Faculty of Science.

Note: The BSc in Communication and Culture is not available with Honours and it may not be used in a Combined Degree Program or subsequently completed as a Second Baccalaureate Degree with any of the following programs:

Bachelor of Communication and Culture degree or equivalent
BA or BSc (Major) program
BA or BSc in Communication and Culture
Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies
Bachelor of Film Studies

A. Faculty of Arts Requirements

Overall Program: Successful completion of an approved program consisting of 120 units.
Program Focus: Successful completion of the multidisciplinary requirements listed below.
Academic Achievement:
1. A minimum GPA of 2.00 must be achieved over all courses.
2. A maximum of 18 units D or D+ grades overall.
University of Calgary Study: A maximum of 60 units in eligible post-secondary transfer credits from other institutions may be counted toward the degree.
Depth: A maximum of 48 units at the junior or 200 level.
Breadth: A minimum of 6 units from the Faculty of Science.
Physical Activity Courses: A maximum of 6 units may be taken from: Dance Education Activity/Theory, Outdoor Pursuits Activity/Theory and Physical Education Activity/Theory.

B. Multidisciplinary Requirements

Minor Field: Successful completion of an approved Minor Field.
Note: It may be difficult to complete Minors that require limited enrolment courses. Not more than 36 units may be from any one Department or from any group of courses that would comprise a Major Field.
Interdisciplinary Course: General Studies 300.
Literature: 3 units in English literature or other literature, including Comparative Literature.
Writing: 3 units chosen from Communication and Media Studies 363, 369 or Science 311.
Intercultural Requirement to be fulfilled in one of the following two ways:
1. Successful completion of at least 6 units from an approved post-secondary Term Abroad, Group Travel Study or Individual Travel Study program. See the Centre for International Students and Study Abroad for programs that are currently offered.
  OR
2. Successful completion of 12 units from the Domain of Intercultural Courses.
Science Requirement: At least 63 units must be from the courses in the Domain of Science.

Faculty of Arts - Minor Programs

Students declare a Minor by requesting a Change of Program through the Student Centre. Students may declare up to two Minors. The completion of a Minor is recorded on the transcript.

To earn a Minor, students must complete at least 30 units and no more than 36 units from the minor Field of Study, including the requirements specified for the particular Minor under the program details.
