In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements, all students in the PhD in Transdisciplinary Research, regardless of specialization, must complete the following requirements:
A minimum of 6 additional units chosen in consultation with the supervisor (and co-supervisor if applicable) and approved by the supervisory committee.
Note:
maximum 6 units of directed studies courses may be taken;
maximum 6 units of 400 or 500-level coursework may be taken.
Advanced Credit
Applicants must make advanced credit requests as part of the admission process. Advanced Credit will not be granted towards TDST 600 or TDST 601, even if students have completed a similar course previously.
Course Exemption
Students who have completed TDST 600 and/or TDST 601 as part of course requirements toward a Master’s degree can request a Course Exemption for these courses in the PhD program, and may complete the PhD with fewer units than normally required for graduation.
Time Limit
Expected completion time is four years for the Doctor of Philosophy. Maximum completion time is six years.
Supervisory Assignments
Applicants must contact faculty members directly regarding supervision prior to submitting an application. Students will not be accepted unless at least one faculty member has indicated a willingness to act as supervisor. The supervisor, in consultation with the student, selects a Supervisory Committee consisting of the supervisor, a co-supervisor (if applicable), and at least one other faculty member whose research experience will be beneficial to the student's graduate program, and at least one non-academic committee member who serves as a knowledge expert demonstrated by their professional background, lived experience, community validation, or resume.
Required Examinations
Candidacy
To enter candidacy students must 1) successfully complete all required courses 2) have the thesis research proposal approved by the Supervisory Committee and 3) successfully complete the Field of Study examination. Thesis Examination
All students in thesis-based programs must successfully pass the Final Thesis Oral examination (see Thesis Examinations).
Scheduling of the Examination
All members of the Supervisory Committee must have reviewed the student’s research and the draft thesis document before the examination can be scheduled.
Composition of the Committee
The examination committee will consist of the supervisory committee, an internal examiner (who may be internal to the supervisor’s home program), plus an external examiner who is external to the University of Calgary. The external examiner must be approved by the Associate Dean, Transdisciplinary Scholarship.
All students will receive a minimum funding guarantee that is equal to or greater than the minimum outlined in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Funding Operating Standard.
Financial assistance may be available to qualified students.
Students are expected to apply for the scholarships and awards for which they are eligible.
