G.2.1 In-Course Assessment Principles
Assessment Principles
Effective assessment practices require that students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning and receive feedback. This principle underlies the following regulations:
a. On or before the last day of classes, students must have received:
i. 30 per cent of the total course grade; or
ii. where an alternative evaluation method is used in a course which does not permit feedback on 30 per cent of the total course grade, (i.e. specifications grading, ungrading), student learning may be formally evaluated at the end of the learning experience, as long as effective formative feedback processes are in place at intervals during the course. This includes: clinical or professional practice-based courses in academic programs leading to professional designation, registration, and/or licensing, regardless of their duration.
b. Assessments carried out during the last 14 calendar days of classes in Fall/Winter Terms and (as defined in the Academic Schedule) may not total more than 15 per cent of the final grade, except in the case of laboratory or oral testing, presentations, or summative projects/papers.
c. Assessments carried out during the last 7 calendar days in Spring/Summer Intersessions (as defined in the Academic Schedule) may not total more than 15 per cent of the final grade, except in the case of laboratory or oral testing, presentations, or summative projects/papers.
d. In-course assessments may not be due or held after the last day of classes.
e. In-course assessments may not be due or held on non-instructional days (e.g., Fall or Winter Term Breaks, recognized university observances/holidays) or on the days after the last day of classes and prior to the first day of the final examination period as indicated in the academic schedule.
f. Academic programs leading to a professional designation, licensing, external accreditation, and formal registration, based on clinical or practice-based courses must meet the assessment requirements as per the course outline.
