Master of Arts (MA) Thesis-based in Anthropology

Completion requirement

In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements and Faculty of Arts requirements, students are required to complete a minimum of 12 units in Anthropology at the 600 level.

The following courses are required of all Master's students:

OR

course, course, course, and course.

At the discretion of the Supervisor and the Graduate Program Director, students may be required to complete up to 18 units total of coursework in Anthropology, depending on their previous academic preparation and background.

Completion requirement

Advanced Credit

The applicant must make advanced credit requests as part of the admission process. Credit will not be given for course work taken as part of another completed degree/diploma or for courses taken to bring the grade point average to the required level for admission.


Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

The program of Anthropology in the department of Anthropology and Archaeology will not permit the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course offered by the Anthropology Program.

Students may not choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.

The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.


Credit for Undergraduate Courses

Only where appropriate to a student’s program, and in consultation with the Graduate Program Director, may graduate credit be received for courses numbered 500-599, which are considered undergraduate courses.


Time Limit

Expected completion time is two years and maximum completion time is four years. See G.D.6 Time Limits.

Supervisory Assignments

A supervisor is assigned to each student upon entering the program.


Thesis Examination

Final thesis oral examinations are open. In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements for Thesis Examinations, the Department requires:

Scheduling of the Examination

All members of the Supervisory Committee must have reviewed the student’s draft thesis document before an examination can be scheduled.

Composition of the Committee

The Internal Examiner may be internal to the home program.

Completion requirement

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance in the form of research and teaching assistantships is available to qualified students. Information on awards can be obtained from the Department office or in the Awards and Financial Assistance section of this Calendar. All students are strongly encouraged to seek external financial assistance for the program.

Students applying for the Graduate Awards Competition scholarships must submit their applications to the Department by January 25.
