In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements and Faculty of Arts requirements, students must complete at least 3 units and up to 24 units of coursework.
ANTH701, a reading course with a focus in either biological or social and cultural anthropology.
Any other courses determined to be necessary by the Supervisory Committee.
Field work or the collection of primary data via experimental and/or observational research for a minimum of 12 months (does not need to be contiguous).
Advanced Credit
The applicant must make Advanced Credit requests as part of the admission process. Credit will not be given for course work taken as part of another completed degree/diploma or for courses taken to bring the grade point average to the required level for admission.
Flexible Grade Option (CG)
The program of Anthropology in the department of Anthropology and Archaeology will not permit the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course offered by the Anthropology Program.
Students may not choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.
The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.
Credit for Undergraduate Courses
Only where appropriate to a student’s program may graduate credit be received for courses numbered 500-599, which are considered undergraduate courses.
Time Limits
Expected completion time is four years. Maximum completion time is six years.
Supervisory Assignments
A supervisor is assigned to each student upon entering the program.
Candidacy
Doctoral students must complete a written thesis proposal, which will be evaluated by the supervisory committee. They must also pass oral and written Field of Study examinations and a second-language proficiency examination. Thesis Examination
Final thesis oral examinations are open. In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements for Thesis Examinations, the Department requires:
Scheduling of the Examination
All members of the Supervisory Committee must have reviewed the student’s draft thesis document before an examination can be scheduled.
Composition of the Committee
The Internal Examiner may be internal to the home program.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance in the form of research and teaching assistantships is available to qualified students. Information on awards can be obtained from the Department office or in the Awards and Financial Assistance section of this Calendar. All students are strongly encouraged to seek external financial assistance for the program.
Students applying for the Graduate Awards Competition scholarships must submit their applications to the Department by January 25.
