G.3.2 Scheduling of Final Examinations and Final Assessments

Scheduling of final examinations focuses on limiting scheduling conflicts for students.

a. The Final Examination Schedule will be published approximately one month after the start of the term and will be available in the Student Centre.

b. Requests for scheduling final examinations on specific dates or at specific times cannot be accommodated, including those final exams for evening and weekend courses.

c. Registrar final exams are scheduled for a maximum of 180 minutes per final examination.

d. Final examinations must be scheduled by the Registrar, except:

  • Final assessments which are take-home, oral, or project presentations.

  • Final examinations in the JD, MD, DVM, and graduate programs offered by the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape, and MBA program.

  • Courses held at an off-campus location where the final examinations will be scheduled at that location. In these cases, the department will schedule the final examination during the official final examination period for that term, as outlined in the Academic Schedule. This excludes non-MD courses at the Foothills campus.

  • Supplemental examinations.

e. Take-home final examinations: students must have seven full days to complete a take home final examination during the final examination period.

Scheduling Common Final Examinations

a. Common final examinations may be scheduled when all sections within the same course are required to have the examination schedule at the same time.

b. Common final examinations must be requested at the time the course is scheduled and may only include other sections of the exact same course.

c. Requests for different courses with the same course instructor cannot be accommodated as a common final examination.

d. When possible, common final examinations will be scheduled in the same location. In some instances, the examination may be scheduled in multiple locations to accommodate the number of students.

e. Where common exams are requested for a course with sections with different instructional modalities (e.g., section 1 is in-person and section 2 is online), the final exam format must adhere to G. Academic Assessments and Examinations.

In-Person Examinations for Distance or Off-Site Courses

Students registered in distance or off-site courses may be required to write a final examination onsite at the Calgary campus as reflected on the course outline.

When the final examination is scheduled on the Calgary campus, students must be provided with the opportunity to write the final examination at an approved invigilation centre if their current residence is more than 100 kilometres from the Calgary campus. A list of approved invigilation centres is available at ucalgary.ca/registrar/exams/preparing-final-exams. Students must inform the course instructor by the following dates if they wish to write a final examination off-site:

Fall November 1
Winter March 1
Spring June 1
Summer August 1

Students registered in an onsite course are expected to write the final examination at the location indicated in the Final Examination schedule. It is only under exceptional circumstances, and with the permission of the Dean or designate of the faculty offering the course, that a student will be permitted to write the examination off-site. The Dean or designate may require documentation to support the request. Examinations may be written at an approved invigilation centre or be invigilated by an individual approved by the faculty.

Students will be responsible for any invigilation fees charged by external examination centres.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
